Somatically insufficiently explained physical complaints

Your child is often bothered by stomach aches, headaches, muscle pains or other vague discomforts. The pediatrician can’t find anything that could explain or causes the symptoms, yet the discomforts still remain. Your child could be suffering from Persistent Physical Symptoms (formerly known as medically unexplained physical symptoms)

Examples could be:
- Pain, such as headaches, stomach aches, back pain, muscle pain or pain in the joints.
- Loss of physical functions, such as paralysis, sudden decline of vision, sudden decline of hearing, problems regarding memory or concentration, problems with talking or swallowing.
Strange movements or vomiting can also be a part of this.
- Tiredness, nausea, an upset stomach or intestines, dizziness
Your child may not be able to move properly, not be able to go to school or has to stop playing sports or doing hobbies. Your child feels alone, scared or worried.

There could be several causes for these symptoms to occur:
- Experiencing violent events
- The personality of the child and the way in which the child deals with difficulties
- The behavior the child has taught itself, or has been taught by the family or by others
- A physical illness that the child has endured, either recently or in the past.

Only when it is clear what factors come into play, a solution can be sought. 10-15% of the children and teenagers are regularly bothered by symptoms like headache, fatigue, muscle pain or dizziness.

At the Kinderpraktijk, together with the child and parents, we will analyse and map the problem areas. Based on this analysis, the problems can be tackled. Each treatments takes 45 minutes.
